The Nigerian Delegates
Nigeria recorded the highest attendance at the FIG 2015 conference with over 200 delegates (excluding accompanying persons numbering over 92) while the Bulgarian delegates were just over 80 in number. The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors made up the core of that figure, constituting over 97% of the Nigerian delegation. We received a resounding applause. Clap too if you are proudly Nigerian.

Nigerian Culture and Intellectual Heritage on Display
The 2015 edition of the conference has shown that the crowd of Nigerian land surveyors at previous editions has not been for fun. This year, the rich Nigerian culture and heritage have been as usual on display; and more to it is the intellectual export. About 70 papers and presentations were delivered by Nigerians. This year’s edition was also attended by the Nigerian Institution of Quantity Surveyors, building new bridges between the two sister professions.

Call for World Surveyors Day

A meeting was held to decide on the modalities of instituting a day in a year to be known as “World Surveyors Day”. The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors’ leadership were there and during which the NIS President and his Deputy made resourceful contributions. The meeting proposed that FIG should set aside a specific day every year when Geodesy, Surveying and mapping will be celebrated globally. The celebrations will in addition to other activities serve as occasions to confer honours on individuals and corporate bodies that have made laudable, rich and enduring contributions to the profession. If the proposal is accepted and implemented, it will increase geo-information awareness for the recognition of the profession’s input to society, governance, business and attract young people to the profession.
