Geoinformation Personality of the Month - July 2015



Prof. Seidu Onialo Mohammed

Director General
National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) - Nigeria 

Born on the 17th of August, 1960 in Abejukolo in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, Seidu Onailo Mohammed had his early education in Ankpa, Kogi State.

He received M.Sc. degree in Soil Survey /Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System from International Institute for Geo-information and Earth Observation (ITC) Twente University,  Enschede, The Netherlands, where he studied as a European Economic Commission Scholar. He also obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Remote Sensing from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria. 

Dr Mohammed served as a senior lecturer in the department of Geology, University of Jos from 2007-2009. He collaborated with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun and Chicago University in USA. 

Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the development of model for desertification assessment and predictions in the North Western part of Nigeria. This model has been applied by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) as well as other Nigerian institutions in studying the menace of desertification. The model is currently being used to study the green belt region in West Africa. He has over 40 publications in applied space science. 

He was appointed Professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems by Kaduna State University on part time on the 5th July 2013. 

He has been the  Director-General of NASRDA in the last five years and was recently re-appointed by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces for another five years . He has made tremendous contributions to the implementation of the space programme in Nigeria. 

Under his leadership, Nigeria launched three satellites. His approach to space technology development has been adjudged a novel model for space programmes in developing countries by the International Academy of Astronautics. 

He is the Chairman, Governing Board, African Regional Centre for Space Technology Education, Ile Ife as well as the Chairman, Board of Directors, GeoApps + Limited. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Astronautics, Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Radio and Planetary Sciences and Member, Board of Governors, Advancement and Support Centre, Kogi State University, Anyigba.
